Prusa Mini Plus + 3D Chameleon Mk4 + Orbiter V2 DirectDrive Extruder + SliceEngineering CopperHead heatbreak, heatblock and nozzle (draft)

Ok. I'm trying to add multi-color to my setup. If Prusa added support for Prusa Mini and Prusa MMU 3 combination I would have gone that way. But hence they don't I've gone 3D Chameleon way.

But lack of documentation and support from 3D Chameleon shows I should have got pre-used Mosaic Palette 2s or 3. But I already got 3D Chameleon, so have to somehow adapt and use it.

So where am I?

Filament tip shaping does not work. Seems CopperHead heatbreak has very crisp hot and cold zone transition. This prevents easy and reliable tip shaping.

I go 3D Clippy way. My 3D Chameleon unit was shipped on 20 May 2024. I thought I got Mk4 version. But there is no way to check it. I connected a servo. I was thought it should be activated right before pulling filament. I tried many different things, read every post regarding Clippy, servo Mk4 software logic, etc. I found that if it is Mk4 and a 5v servo is connected to board of 3D Chameleon and filament unload is requested then servo is being activated. So if it doesn't you have older firmware.

I go Firmware Flashing nightmare. I have Arduino Nano (ch340) and I try to use it as programmer to update firmware and bootloader. Buy the way information that I should update bootloader PRIOR to updating firmware is shown after information about firmware updating. Now I have updated firmware but unable to update bootloader. The board seems bricked. And I'm not sure if I will be able to recover it. Looks I need a 10µF electrolytic capacitor connected between RESET and GND on programmer board. To be able to flash bootloader into MMU board. Looks like flashing firmware does not require this capacitor trick. Soon I'll buy the capacitor. Let's see will it help or not.

To 3D Chameleon staff:

First of all Thank you guys! Thank you Bill! Mechanical part is perfect. The idea is perfect! But I have few complains.

I undersand that may be this box was stored in the warehouse for few months. But is it so hard to print a paper with information about which Hardware and Firmware versions I get in this package and put it into the shipment box?

3D Chameleon staff must know MMU unit is not a coffee cup. People do not buy such units every day, use it once and then throw it. Currently when a person orders a unit he steps into dark forrest of fear and lack of information. They need to write a unified detailed OFFICIAL documentation. This is not an open source project. If they sell a product they have to test, document and support it. Client should not run through this forum searching for information. They need rock solid official documentation. Also it is a bad idea to take old post about upgrading from Mk2 to Mk3 and modify it to cover Mk3 to Mk4 upgrade post. I think old post should stay intact and separate Mk3 to Mk4 upgrade post added. This could help users to compare upgrade processes and find helpful details.

I appreciate Chris Rileys efforts. Thank you Chris! But his guide is NOT OFFICAL, already OUTDATED as he covers Mk3 and it does not cover all subjects around 3D Chameleon as he does not cover BOOUTLOADER FLASHING and 3D Clippy.

I designed a mount for 3D Clippy between Orbiter and hearbreak. A Bambulab cutter blade is mounted to the lever. The lever is loaded by a spring taken from cheapest possible button pen. The servo is mounted on Z carriage. It is meant that it will stay with arm turned to right side. When its time to cut filament it will turn left and X carriage will move towards servo and press cutter lever against servo arm. Job done, filament is cut. When I finish with adaption of 3D Chameleon into my setup I will share this design with public. It can be helpful for those who use Orbiter.

To be continued.

The servo is activated when the new filiment is selected. Between steps 0 and second 1. To do this you would want to add:

...

9.5. Extract filament to just before the cutter,

0. 2 pulses - pick filament 2 (Wait 2 seconds for the cutter to complete)

0.5. Feed a small amount to clear the cutter and then extract the rest of the way out of the Extruder.

...

The 10 pulse mode change is not present in the Mk4 firmware.
