I was wondering if there was a way to change the speed of the steppers for faster toolchanges (source code or some setting I could change)?

Well, that's what Mode 3 does by default. You enter that distance into the GCode Generator as the "Backout Distance in Seconds." Basically, 1 second per 2.5cm or 1 inch.
