I haven't done this myself, but you should look at this post: https://www.3dchameleon.com/forum/your-3d-chameleon-creations/build-using-creality-melzi-board-and-display. They got it working reliably with the board and 8-bit display. Another cheap option is using the Keyestudio CNC Shield v4.
